A Collective Community Effort
In June 2025, more than 40 residents, nonprofit leaders, creatives, and city officials came together for Clean Sweep – a community-powered event to refresh the future home of SoulStation, a new cultural and culinary hub being developed by the New Community Leadership Foundation (NCLF) in the Tenderloin.
This milestone marked the culmination of a seven-year journey and vision led by SoulStation Co-Founder Cheryl Shanks, who dreamed of creating a space where the community could gather, share food, and build opportunity.
Thanks to the generous support of sponsor Tenderloin Blackness, event volunteers contributed over 200 hours to begin transforming the space into a welcoming hub for creativity, culture, and opportunity. Local media highlighted SoulStation’s vision as a place where food and community meet, and where collaboration turns vision into reality.
Why SoulStation Matters
SoulStation isn’t just a restaurant — it’s a gathering place designed to restore dignity, create jobs and training opportunities, and celebrate the Tenderloin’s creative spirit.
As one Tenderloin resident shared:
“This space gives me hope — it’s about opportunity, not just survival.”
The community’s enthusiasm continues to shape every step of this journey, ensuring SoulStation reflects the heart of those it serves.
What’s Next
With design and kitchen planning underway, the next phase will focus on building out the space and launching programs that uplift the community and support local entrepreneurs. Special thanks to the Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) for providing the initial planning grant to help lay the foundation. NCLF is now raising funds to complete the build-out and replace essential equipment and fixtures in preparation for activation in 2026.
